Deep Freeze Exhibition
Habourfront Centre for Arts
Toronto, ON /// 2013
January 26 - June 9, 2013

This project was commissioned by the Harbourfront Centre for a site-specific and theme-specific installation in the Architecture Gallery. The exhibition was titled Deep Freeze and "presents projects of new architecture being built in the North by firms allied to the North. It also presents current creative research and advanced inventive insights that respond to dilemmas faced by Arctic development."

The Canadian Arctic is a rapidly-changing frontier of knowledge and education. Expertise is plentiful, and yet, a locked-up resource in the Arctic. There exist two highly knowledgeable groups: the Inuit, whose intimate experience of the land surpasses most physical records, and the scientific community, who are intensely monitoring and recording changes in lifestyle, habitat and environment due to climate change. Both are struggling to communicate their knowledge of the Arctic, to each other, and to the rest of the world. While there exist several northern colleges that teach practical skills and trades, there are few opportunities that facilitate an inclusive common ground for learning and sharing traditional and scientific knowledge. Canada is currently the only country that does not have a degree-granting institution north of the Arctic Circle.

Knowledge Clouds examines how architecture can engage the scale of geography, and tests the possibility of an incremental, expandable, mobile system of education that can serve as seeds of knowledge exchange and production in the North. A pan-arctic university is imagined as Knowledge Clouds: classroom units are able respond, deploy and aggregate, to suit changing local needs and learning calendars. Embracing the arctic airship technology predicted to supply logistical mobility with a 40-ton capacity, the labs consist of a series of lightweight units that can be shipped by air and remain on sites for varying periods of time. The form and materials are designed to respond to wind and weather when they are anchored on the land, forming new knowledge sites across the Canadian North.

Arctic Adaptations: Nunavut at 15 has been selected through a national juried competition to represent Canada at the 2014 Venice Biennale in Architecture, the Canada Council for the Arts and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada announced March 26, 2013. The exhibition will be organized and curated by Lateral Office of Toronto.

As Nunavut celebrates its 15th anniversary in 2014, Arctic Adaptations will present innovative architecture proposals rooted in Nunavut’s distinct land, climate and culture, reflecting local traditions of migration, mobility and seasonality. It will also explore how, in light of dramatic environmental, social and economic forces that are transforming the Arctic today, architecture might help nurture robust, prosperous and vibrant Northern communities.

The Venice Biennale in Architecture takes place in Venice, Italy from June 7 to November 23, 2014, and will receive more than 350,000 visitors.

Containerization
Design Week 2013 - Workshop
Louisiana State University
January 15-18, 2013

Rob Holmes [mammoth] and Mason White collaborated on a design project brief called Containerization for the annual Design Week at the Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture at Louisiana State University.

<img src="http://payload130.cargocollective.com/1/7/254933/4910843/DesignWeek_Containerization_1000.jpg" width="1000" height="833" width_o="1000" height_o="833" src_o="http://payload130.cargocollective.com/1/7/254933/4910843/DesignWeek_Containerization_o.jpg" data-mid="26270578" border="0" align="left"/>

More on the Design Week schedule / events.

ABSTRACT:
Containerization—the standardization of cargo containers for multimodal transport on ships, trains, and trucks—has produced, since its advent in the mid-twentieth century, a set of repeating, globally-standardized landscape formats: warehouses, distribution centers, yards, and, most crucially, container ports. Similarly configured from Durban to St. Petersburg and Antwerp to Busan, container ports are perhaps the most intensive spatial manifestation of the most globally significant economic trend of the past several decades—globalization—and yet relatively unstudied as an opportunity for landscape architectural intervention.

The aim of this exercise is to rapidly prototype alternative futures for a set of container ports in wildly diverse geographic contexts.

Mason White has been selected for the 2013 Howard A. Friedman Visiting Professorship in the Practice of Architecture at Berkeley College of Environmental Design. He will co-teach a studio with Nicholas de Monchaux on relocation and adaptation of coastal villages in Alaska. We will be working with the Alaska Design Forum and the Cold-Climate Housing Research Center in Fairbanks.

Howard A. Friedman, FAIA, graduated from UC Berkeley in 1949 (A.B. Architecture). He joined the architecture department in 1966 as a lecturer after building a distinguished private architectural practice in the Bay Area. In 1979 he became a full-time member of the CED faculty while continuing his private practice, and served as chair of the architecture department from 1986 until his death in 1988.

2012 Laureate
December 13, 2012

The Arctic Food Network project team, led by Lateral Office, is the recipient of the inaugural Arctic Inspiration Prize (AIP) for 2012. The AIP is conceived of by The S. and A. Inspiration Foundation - founded by Ms. Sima Sharifi and Mr. Arnold Witzig in 2008 as a not-for-profit corporation. The AIP is maintained by ArcticNet and celebrated at the annual ArcticNet meeting, which this year took place on December 13, 2012 in Vancouver, BC.

The team consists of: Lateral Office, Nunavut Tunngavik Inc, Arctic College, Rankin Inlet HTO, Sanikiluaq HTO, and James Ford (McGill University).

The Arctic Inspiration Prize is intended for multidisciplinary teams who have made a substantial, demonstrated and distinguished contribution to the gathering of Arctic knowledge and who have provided a concrete plan and commitment to implement their knowledge into real world application for the benefit of the Canadian Arctic, its Peoples and therefore Canada as a whole.
The Arctic Food Network team was one of four laureates to receive the Prize.
